Common Reeds Canarygrass
• Less palatable due to higher alkaloid content. Also the common variety has less vigorous growth.
Dwarf Essex Rape
• High growth variety of rape; rape is a Brassica species along with turnips, cabbage, and kale
• A cool season plant and grows better when temperatures are cool
• Used primarily for grazing and not suitable for hay or silage due to high moisture content
• Planting Rate Per Acre: Alone 4-8 lbs; In a Mix 3-6 lbs Planting Depth ½”
Emerald Crown Vetch
• A legume that is used to control erosion and stabilize road banks and terraces
• Can be used for pasture but will not tolerate close grazing
• A perennial that needs little topsoil or mowing
• Dense, complex root system chokes out weeds, and builds topsoil
• Produces lush green, fire-resistant foliage and colorful blossoms that persist from early summer to fall
• Planting Rate Per Acre: Alone 10-15 lbs; In a Mix 5-10 lbs Planting Depth ½”
Hairy Vetch
• A vigorous growing legume that is used mostly as a plow-down for green manure
• Sometimes seeded in corn at the last cultivation or planted with fall rye grain in the fall
• Planting Rate Per Acre: Alone 25-40 lbs; In a Mix 15-20 lbs Planting Depth ½”-1”
Marathon Reeds Canarygrass
• A highly palatable variety (low alkaloid) of Reed Canarygrass
• A tall-growing, perennial grass
• Well adapted to wet soils and also productive on upland sites
• Spreads by underground stems (rhizomes) and forms a solid sod
• Can be harvested as pasture, silage, or hay, whether sown in pure stands or in mixtures with legumes
• Used most extensively in waterways to control erosion
• Planting Rate Per Acre: Alone 10-12 lbs; In a Mix 4-8 lbs Planting Depth ¼” to ½”
Norcen Birdsfoot Trefoil
• A newer variety of trefoil that shows an intermediate growth habit with rapid regrowth after cutting • Yields substantially more than other trefoils
• Trefoils don't yield as well as alfalfa for hay or silage but have several advantages: don't cause bloat, can be grown in poorly-drained or low pH soils, provide late summer feeding in pastures, and persist longer due to the plants reseeding characteristics
• Trefoils should always be inoculated
• Planting Rate Per Acre: Alone 5-8 lbs; In a Mix 3-5 lbs Planting Depth ¼” to ½”
